60 Hours of Terror, Mumbai Terror Attack Comes to a Close; Updated: Death Toll Rising?

The final death toll put on the Mumbai terror attacks is 195. Officials warn though additional bodies may be found in the coming days. This attack was a well prepared and well planned attack on the heart of India's financial and cultural center, meant to send a signal to leaders around the world, including the incoming Obama administration. The War on Terror rages on, period. Anyone one who continues to deny the danger coming from Islamist radicals is a fool, period.

As I noted yesterday, there appears to have been a massive breakdown in intel on the side of India. NDTV is reporting that the terrorists booked and stayed in a room in the Taj Hotel for up to four days prior to the attacks, during which a number of visitors stopped in. The room also served as a weapons and ammunition cache.

One captured terrorist is also reported to have told police that locals from Mumbai assisted in the operation:

MUMBAI Did some Mumbai locals provide support to the Pakistani terrorists? Azam Amir Kasab, the only Pakistani terrorist nabbed alive, has revealed names and addresses of at least five people from the city who helped the terror operation.
Sources said that help like, providing shelter, taking them around and showing places, passing information on police stations and nakabandhis were given by these locals. Joint commissioner of police (crime) Rakesh Maria said,"We suspect there could be local assistants but it is subject to verification. It will be very premature to comment on this at this stage as our investigations is going on."

Details are still sketchy but reports have been coming in that "piles of bodies" have been found in a number of hotel rooms. It is my belief that the final toll will surpass 200 by a fair amount but some of the victims are probably being counted twice. It will be several more days most likely before we have a definitive death toll.

Terror in Mumbai...
This story is still developing and Indian anti-terror teams are still battling terror groups in the streets as citizens and tourists flee Indian financial and tourist center.

Armed with AK-47 rifles and grenades, a couple of terrorists entered the passenger hall of CST and opened fire and threw grenades, Mumbai General Railway Police Commissioner A K Sharma said.

The terror strike which began at 10:33 PM at Chhatrapathi Shivaji Terminus(CST), formerly known as the Victoria Terminus(VT), claimed 10 lives in the premises of the station alone, police said.

Three persons were killed in a bomb explosion in a taxi on Mazegaon dockyard road and an equal number were gunned down at Taj Hotel. The victims in the hotel were its employees.

The lobby of the Oberoi hotel was on fire and the hotel evacuated, eyewitnesses said.

Maharashtra DGP A N Roy said tonight's attack in "at least seven places" is a "terror strike."

Hemant Karkare, an Indian anti-terror chief has been killed in the attack, according to NDTV.

Ace is reporting that federal anti-terror police are moving in, alongside the military as they move to assist overwhelmed local police.

The latest death toll according to NDTV (linked above) has surpassed 90 and army units have moved into the area and are seeking to release hostages. The current hostage number estimate has increased sharply and is currently more than 40.

There seems to be a consensus within the blogosphere and among news sources, both international and local Indian, that the Deccan Mujahideen, whom have claimed credit for the attack, are responsible for the attack(s).

Western intelligence services had been expecting an al-Qaeda spectacular terrorist attack in this crucial period between the end of President Bush’s Administration and the succession of Barack Obama.

Signals intelligence “chatter” in recent weeks had indicated that Osama bin Laden’s terrorist organisation might be plotting an attack “to grab the headlines” before Mr Obama takes over in the White House on January 20. British security and intelligence sources said there had been increasing concern, particularly in the United States, that a “terrorist spectacular” was on the cards.

The multiple attacks on Westerners in Bombay tonight showed all the signs of an al-Qaeda strategy — picking on vulnerable Western “soft targets” but not in a country where there would be maximum security. The bombing of Western targets in Bali in 2002 when al-Qaeda-linked terrorists planted bombs in touristfavoured restaurants and nightclubs was another example where the terror group switched its resources to achieve maximum impact.

The situation is still not under control according to Indian officials. The Times of India is reporting that at least 11 police officers have been killed and security forces are still attempting to locate hiding terrorist teams.

MUMBAI: Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Thursday termed as "very grave" the situation in Mumbai arising out of Wednesday night's
terror attacks across the city that left 80 people, including 11 policemen, dead.

He said some terrorists were holed up at the Taj Hotel at Colaba and Trident (formerly Oberoi) hotels.

Mumbai Terror Attack: Massive Intel Failure?

Times of India: Terrorists seemed to be sure of Taj hotel terrain

MUMBAI: The battle-scarred Marine Commandos, engaged to flush out terrorists from the Taj hotel, are surprised at the level of training their
adversaries evidently received

and the money and the massive firepower at their disposal. The commandos have also been shocked by the familiarity and ease with which the terrorists operated inside the Taj and the Trident.

The Marine Commandos, popularly known as Marcos, are men handpicked by the Indian Navy to undertake combat and rescue operations on sea and, if required, on land. Maharashtra chief secretary Johnny Joseph was quick to seek their help on Wednesday evening till the National Security Guards (NSG) team arrived from Delhi on Thursday morning.

It's looking more and more like the recent terror operation in Mumbai took months of planning, if not longer. The Indian Coast Guard is reported to have seized at least one "mothership" from which a number of small craft carrying terrorists originated from before making landfall in Mumbai. One captured terrorist claimed that the operation had been in the works for more than six months.

It is imperative that leading nations (read India, the U.S., etc.) get a handle on these intelligence failures. Intel, however, is a hard thing to judge. This may have slipped through the radar but we may never know what other operations are stopped by various world intel communities. Nonetheless, it is dispiriting to see such a plan executed so well with so little warning.

Mumbai is yet another reminder that the War on Terror rolls on and will for a long, long time. God bless the warriors, both Indian commandos and the hotel staffs, that fought to keep so many innocent lives out of danger.

A Killer's Confession: The Leaked Mumbai Terrorist's Confession

I'm packing up and getting ready to make the drive back to Savannah, a rainy one it will be, so I haven't much time to post any thoughts or really examine this but here it is; the confession of Azam Amir Kasav in which he states that the terror team was trained by a Pakistani group with ties to Pakistan's ISI intelligence service.

Via Noblesse Oblige:

A native of Faridkot in Pakistan- occupied Kashmir, Azam revealed the names of his fellow terrorists, all Pakistani citizens: Abu Ali, Fahad, Omar, Shoaib, Umer, Abu Akasha, Ismail, Abdul Rahman (Bara) and Abdul Rahman (Chhota).

But the 10 men were apparently not the only ones directly involved: Another group, he claimed, had checked themselves into hotels four days before, waiting with weapons and ammunition they had stockpiled in the rooms.

The 10 men in Azam’s group were chosen well: All were trained in marine warfare and had undergone a special course conducted by the Lashkar-e-Taiba. Preparations were also detailed, and started early.

Azam and eight others in the team made a reconnaissance trip to Mumbai several months before the attacks, pretending to be Malaysian students. They rented an apartment at Colaba market, near one of their targets, the Nariman House.

The chief planner of the attacks also visited Mumbai a month before to take photographs and film strategic locations, including the hotel layouts.

Returning to Pakistan, the chief plotter trained the group, telling them to ‘kill till the last breath’.

Surprisingly, the men did not expect themselves to be suicide terrorists. Azam said they had originally planned to sail back on Thursday - the recruiters had even charted out a return route, stored on a GPS device.

On the evening of Nov 21, Azam’s group set off from an isolated creek in Karachi in a boat. The next day, a large Pakistani vessel with four Pakistanis and crew picked them up, whereupon the group was issued arms and ammunition.

Each man in the assault team was handed six to seven magazines of 50 bullets each, eight hand grenades, one AK-47 assault rifle, an automatic loading revolver, credit cards and a supply of dried fruit. They were, as some media put it, in for the long haul.

A day later, the team came across an Indian-owned trawler, Kuber, which they boarded. They killed four of the fishermen onboard, dumped their bodies into the sea, and forced its skipper Amarjit Singh to sail for India.

The next day, they beheaded the skipper, and one of the gunmen, a trained sailor, took the wheel and headed for the shores of Gujarat, India.

Near Gujarat, the terrorists raised a white flag as two officers of the coast guard approached.

While the officers questioned them, one of the terrorists grappled with one of them, slit his throat and threw his body into the boat. The group then ordered the other officer to help them get to Mumbai.

On Nov 26, the team reached the Mumbai coast.

Four nautical miles out, they were met by three inflatable speedboats. They killed the other coast guard officer, transferred into the speedboats and proceeded to Colaba jetty as dusk settled.

The Kuber was found later with the body of the 30-year-old captain onboard.

At Badhwar Park in Cuffe Parade - just three blocks away from Nariman House - the 10 men got off, stripped off the orange windbreakers they had been wearing and made sure to take out their large, heavy backpacks.

It was there that they were spotted by fisherman Prasan Dhanur, who was preparing his boat, and harbour official Kashinath Patil, 72, who was on duty nearby.

“Where are you going?” Patil asked them. “What’s in your bags?”

The men replied: “We don’t want any attention. Don’t bother us.”

Thinking little of it, Dhanur and Patil, who said they did not see the guns hidden in the backpacks, did not call the police, and watched the 10 young men walk away.

Then the carnage started.

On hitting the ground, the 10 men broke up.

Four men headed for the Taj Mahal Hotel, two for The Oberoi Trident, two for Nariman House and two - Azam and Ismail - for the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus by taxi.

At the railway station, Azam and his colleague opened fire, targeting Caucasian tourists while trying to spare Muslims.

The two gunmen also destroyed the CCTV control room, throwing grenades into it.

It was here that Azam was photographed, dressed in light-grey combat trousers and sneakers, a rucksack on his back, toting his AK-47.

According to one security expert, the way he carried the assault rifle revealed months of training.

The two men left the main hall of the railway station littered with bodies and pools of blood, then moved on to Metro Cinema and then to the Girgaum Chowpatty area in a stolen Skoda.

It was there that their plans started to unravel.

At the Girgaum Chowpatty area, Azam and Ismail were intercepted by anti-terror troops from the Gamdevi police station, and they ended up trading shots.

Azam managed to shoot dead assistant police inspector Tukaram Umbale, while one of them also gunned down anti-terror squad chief Hemant Karkare.

Ismail, however, was eventually killed, while Azam himself was shot in the hand. Pretending to be dead, he fell, and the two men were taken to Nair Hospital.

But police soon spotted him breathing and quickly evacuated the hospital’s casualty ward, and brought in the anti-terror squad to interrogate him.

Winds of War Grow Stronger, India Demand Pakistan Turn Over Suspects

A list of 20 names has reportedly been given to Pak officials as the world turns more of its attention towards Pakistan.

MUMBAI, India (AP) — India demanded that Pakistan hand over suspected terrorists believed living in the country — including its most-wanted man — as diplomatic wrangling between the nuclear rivals intensified Tuesday following the deadly Mumbai attacks.

A list of about 20 names was given to Pakistan's high commissioner to India during a meeting Monday night, Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters.

India has already demanded Pakistan take "strong action" against those responsible for the attacks, and the U.S. has pressured Islamabad to cooperate.

The moves come as the government faces widespread accusations of security and intelligence failures after suspected Muslim militants carried out a three-day attack across India's financial capital, killing 172 people and wounding 239.

The 10 gunmen had trained for months in camps operated by a banned Pakistani militant group before slipping into Mumbai from the sea, the only known surviving attacker told police.

Meanwhile, one Pakistani Army official has called the terrorists "patriots". Via The Long War Journal:

A senior Pakistani military official called two senior Taliban leaders "patriots," signaling a shift in posture against the Taliban in the Northwest Frontier Province. The Mumbai terror siege and India's reaction may lead the Pakistani Army to negotiate peace agreements with the Taliban to free up troops for the eastern border with India.

The official, who was not named, called Taliban leaders Baitullah Mehsud and Mullah Fazlullah "patriots" during a briefing with senior Pakistani journalists, The News reported. He said the military and the Taliban are clashing due to "some misunderstandings."

"We have no big issues with the militants in Fata [the Federally Administered Tribal Areas],” the official said. "We have only some misunderstandings with Baitullah and Fazlullah. These misunderstandings could be removed through dialogue."

The original post was getting a bit lengthy and difficult to follow so here is a fresh thread as more updates roll in.

The current number of injured being bantered about by several news sources is 800-900, with the death toll remaining at about 80-90. I fear though the death toll will go up, that is if the number of injured is in fact that, fact. The death toll hasn't moved much over the past couple of hours while the number of those injured/wounded has increased more than 400%. I fear with morning light and some more digging, the death toll could be well into the hundreds.

As I feared, NDTV is now reporting that the death toll exceeds 100, however injured number have been reduced significantly. An estimated 100 have been injured in 10 separate attacks.

Fox News is reporting that up to seven hostages have been freed from the Oberoi hotel and three buildings remain under siege from terrorist teams.

Witnesses are reporting new gunfire and explosions at the Taj and Oberoi hotels.

The death toll remains around 125 with estimates of injured and wounded ranging between 250-400. There are also more reports about terrorists specifically asking for British and U.S. citizens, asking to see hostage passports.

The U.S. State Dept. has set up a number for concerned friends and family members of those who are in the area. The number is 1-888-407-4747.

Terrorists have overrun a Jewish center in the heart of Mumbai and reportedly are holding 8 Israelis hostage.

U.S. State Dept. officials and "American sources on the ground" are searching hospitals for American victims...

I fear for security forces with all of this real time video coverage. One must imagine terrorists will be doing anything they can to gain an advantage and have intel on where counter-operations will be coming from.

Here is a portion of the email sent by the "Deccan Mujihadeen" in which they claim responsibility for the attacks.

You should know that your acts are not at all left unnoticed; rather we are closely keeping an eye on you and just waiting for the right time to execute your bloodshed. We are aware of your recent raids at Ansarnagar, Mograpada in Andheri and the harassment and trouble you created there for the Muslims

You threatened to murder them and your mischief went to such an extent that you even dared to abuse and insult Maulana Mahmood-ul-Hasan Qasmi and even misbehaved with the Muslim women and children there.

“If this is the degree your arrogance has reached, and if you think that by these stunts you can scare us, then let the Indian Mujahideen warn all the people of Mumbai that whatever deadly attacks Mumbaikars will face in future, their responsibility would lie with the Mumbai ATS and their guardians - Vilasrao Deshmukh and R R Patil. You are already on our hit-list and this time very very seriously.

The Times of India and other local sources have been reporting for a number of hours that the group is likely connected to or from Pakistan.

Dark Days Close Out 2008 and First Decade of Millennium

As the world is days away from the end of 2008 and draws ever nearer to the end of the decade, the world appears quite different than when we entered into the 21st century. Following the perceived "threat" that was Y2K, the state of world affairs was seen by many as relatively calm. That calm was of course shattered violently on a sunny September morning in 2001. Following the attacks of 9/11 various other nations have been dealt attacks from Islamists seeking to spread their terror across the globe yet again.

The horror of Madrid played out during March of 2004 on televisions across the globe. I myself was on a train in Switzerland when armed Swiss military police boarded our train in the middle of an open field asking to see passports and IDs of all passengers aboard. At the time we had not yet heard of the horrific attacks that had played out in Madrid earlier in the day. It wouldn't be until my friend and I arrived at our hotel room that we would see the carnage so many others had already witnessed.

London was also a target as Brits ran for their lives amongst bombs tearing through their city and one can never forget the infamous image of an idealic red double-decker bus with its top story and roof torn off. London continues to be under the grave threat of another Islamist terror attack, along with the United States and Australia, which sits disturbingly close to the world's largest Muslim nation, Indonesia.

Now, in the waning days of 2008, two historically volatile regions have flared up once again. Pakistan and India sit once again face-to-face with the threat of war looming following the Mumbai terror attacks of last month. As many suspected immediately, all roads led back to Pakistan. Now, Pakistan has moved it's army east as it prepares for what could be a showdown with their Indian neighbors.

This move will also have implications for U.S. troops in the area. Now, whatever role the Pak army has played in the Waziristan region will no doubt be reduced which will possibly lend more freedom of movement to the Taliban and other fighters hiding out in the region. This, coupled with a coming American troop increase next year in Afghanistan, will lead to some interesting foreign policy decisions for the incoming President-Elect, Barack Obama.

Finally, before the Christmas lights could even be turned off and much less taken down, Israeli jets have hit countless targets inside the Gaza strip following Hamas' decision to call off the "ceasefire" and begin lobbing missiles back into the Jewish state to randomly murder innocent Israelis. There will be innocents killed on both sides and that will break any decent person's heart. However, a strike by Israel has been long coming. For now government can be expected to sit idly by while its citizenry is under the constant threat of random murder via Qassam rockets shot by Palestian terrorists. Perhaps one day the people of Palestine will grow weary of such leadership that brings such repercussions upon them.

The world faces some dark times in the near future and coming years. President-Elect Barack Obama had best have his gameface on when he takes office early next year. To spout campaign slogans during an election is one thing for any politician to do. But next year, he will be making real decisions that will affect the lives of countless Americans and those of our allies. I pray he is more mature and historically-astute than what he has appeared to be during his campaign and his short time on the national scene. I'm not holding my breath.

2009 will be yet another year of high international tensions. Just how high those tensions will go remains to be seen.

A banned Islamic terrorist group funded with cash raised in British mosques is believed to be behind the Mumbai attacks.

Kashmiri separatists Lashkar-e-Taiba, ‘The Army of the Righteous’, which has strong links to Al Qaeda, is accused of previous terrorist outrages in India.

And intercepted telephone and radio communications before and during the latest attacks apparently suggest a link.

Captured terrorist claims plan was to kill 5,000.

The only terrorist captured alive after the Mumbai massacre has given police the first full account of the extraordinary events that led to it – revealing he was ordered to ‘kill until the last breath’.

Azam Amir Kasab, 21, from Pakistan, said the attacks were meticulously planned six months ago and were intended to kill 5,000 people.

He revealed that the ten terrorists, who were highly trained in marine assault and crept into the city by boat, had planned to blow up the Taj Mahal Palace hotel after first executing British and American tourists and then taking hostages.

The search for remaining terrorists continues on. Sadly, as I noted in an earlier post concerning this topic, initial reports of released Jewish hostages at the Chabad center appear to have been incorrect with a reported 5 hostages found dead.

Reports are also coming out that British men were among the terrorists.

Two British-born Pakistanis were among eight gunmen seized by Indian commandos who stormed buildings to free hostages, Vilasrao Deshmukh, the chief minister of Mumbai, reportedly said.

The Foreign Office earlier said it was investigating reports on NDTV, a local television news channel, that the terrorists - who swarmed luxury hotels and other tourist sites in the city - included "British citizens of Pakistani origin".

And Rivkah Holtzberg's two-year-old son, Moshe, may have been beaten by the militants, reports have claimed.

His back was covered in bruises consistent with abuse, the chairman of Zaka, Israel's ultraorthodox recovery service, told Sky News.
